My rules for TV

Have you ever met one of those annoying people who would always make you put a coffee cup on a coaster? Those people who would fuss if you put garbage into the wrong recycling bin, or get all upset about their toast being a little burnt? I'm like that....when it comes to TV...(and movies, for that matter). Ironically I don't even own a freaking television, I watch it all on my laptop.

I almost exclusively prefer comedies. The main reason for this is that comedies work for any time of the day, pretty much every mood and don't leave you an emotional wreck every time a character is killed off. When starting a new TV series, I prescribe it as mandatory to watch the first 3 episodes before making up your mind to decide whether or not to continue with it. Pilots are only a short introduction, watching a couple of extra episodes gives you a solid idea of the style of humor and a nice insight into the characters. If you're not hooked by no.3, it's probably not worth it.

Anyways, I'm going to start reviewing some of my favorite TV shows, starting with the ones I used to watch a while back, and continuing in a random order with whatever strikes my fancy.

Next review is for

Friends (1994-2004)

Stay tuned....

Fall is here

Fall Season is here. This is the time when every TV addict awakens from their grumpy hibernation and starts jumping off the walls with the anticipation that precludes seeing a new episode of your favorite show. Not entirely sure which ones to bother with? Here’s my rundown of the best shows on TV right now.

          1. The Big Bang Theory- Season 6

This is probably one of my favorite shows of all time. What makes the Big Bang Theory so great is that it always hits the mark. Every show is a solid episode, with good laughs, tasteful humor and...Sheldon, arguably one of the funniest characters on TV. This show simply does not disappoint, and although it may not have much to offer in the sense of plot or purpose, it’s consistently hilarious, which is more than anyone can ask for.

2.     2.   How I Met Your Mother- Season 8
Season 7 of How I Met Your Mother (a more appropriate title being: How I Got Wasted With My Friends And Told Every Girl I Met That I Loved Her While Vaguely Referencing Something About A Mother) left us with the jaw dropping revelation that the Bride of the enigmatic Barney Stinson was in fact Robin, the girl everyone can see Ted is still in love with. Ok, it wasn’t a jaw dropping revelation, I predicted it. With hand motions. And superb timing.

Season 8 has this group back together, for what may be the last time. Marshal and Lilly have a baby. Ted has a girl who makes pastries. Barney has Quinn. And Robin has, some guy. And somehow this all mashes up into Barney and Robin, and Ted and the elusive Mother. Anyways, Season 8 started off well enough, this show promises a few decent laughs,
good editing and of course: Barney.

      3. The Office- Season 9

This will now be the second season without the clumsy yet lovable Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell). And yet the hallowed offices of Dunder Mifflin are no less chaos free. Season 8 played out reasonably well despite him being gone, and the new episode of Season 9 does not disappoint at all. Although, in all honesty, I cannot stand Nellie Bertram (the annoying red haired woman with the British accent, played by Catherine Tate) and can’t wait to see her written out.

     4. The Mentalist- Season 5
I have a rule. I had a rule. Comedy only. Then I found the Mentalist. While the show is not original in any sense (Consulting Detective? More on that later) the characters blend well together and the overall storyline is fascinating. Simon Baker, who plays Patrick Jane; the shrewd Mentalist absolutely carries the show with his excellent acting and charming smile. Even though I can usually spot the villain the moment he/she enters the screen, I still find the show gripping and fun to watch. The newest episode airs tonight, and I cannot wait to watch it.
.

                5. Downton Abbey Season 3

A melodrama in every sense of the word, Downton Abbey features the best in art direction, costumes and acting. Although the plot is rather trite, you cannot help but invest in the characters on the screen in front of you. The show is charming and lacks the ridiculous plot twists of contemporary soaps, which is a refreshing change from anyone unfortunate enough to have watched Desperate Housewives or Gossip Girl.

             6.  2 Broke Girls Season 2
2 Broke Girls is not the finest in entertainment. That being said, the show is cute and funny, with two main characters who are dynamic and refreshingly contrasting. Despite being about two girls, the show is not girly in the slightest. Although Max and Caroline may never reach their monetary goals, they do deliver a few good laughs and an overall decent show.

  7. 30 Rock Season 7

30 Rock is a combination of the most ridiculous humor on the planet and a jumble of political satire (most of the latter coming from the stellar Alec Baldwin). 30 Rock is not mainstream funny, the style and plots being vastly different from most situation comedies, which is what I like about it. Sadly, this will be the final season, so be sure to tune in to catch the crazy antics of the most dysfunctional group of TV writers (with the exception of the real life team that wrote Gossip Girl. Although that may or may not have been a chimpanzee on cocaine).

8.    The Simpsons Season 24

Will this one ever end? 24 years! The Simpsons, which began as a parody of the modern American family, has become an icon for the very family it mocks. A blend of satire, slapstick humor, bad puns and ridiculous stereotypes, the Simpsons is the perfect blend of comedy. That being said, I’m not the only one to notice that their recent episodes have been less fun and more “huh”? than anything else. Despite that, I will probably give the first episode a watch anyways, in the hopes that they have attempted to steer back to the stupidity that made the Simpsons so iconic.

Do note that I have not mentioned Community, which is not due to air for 3 weeks. At which point I will go into convulsions and spasms and may need to be hospitalized. With regards to my comment about Gossip Girl, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize to cocaine-addicted Chimpanzees around the world who may have been hurt or offended by my demeaning insults.

Stay Tuned.

Do you love TV?

Ok, a little bit about myself,

(I really love this part, I get to drone on about myself while pretending people are listening, it's the best)

Anyways,

I love TV. Watching it. Just watching it, I assure you, our relationship is purely platonic. Aside from the 3 week fling I had with Cobie Smulders (she may not know about it) TV and I share the same bond that grips anyone hapless enough to be subjected to its awesomeness. As you may have gathered, I watch a lot of tv. But I'm also a writer. And a musician. And broke. That goes without saying. I'm also, lets put it delicately, in between jobs, job hunting, in the middle of a career change. Sounds a lot nicer than unemployed. But enough about me, a little more about this blog. I love my favorite shows. Very much. And I will be creating a bunch of articles, various reviews and little tidbits about my shows. I hope you like it.

Stay tuned.

Or bookmarked.

Or try to remember the dumb URL.

Cheers.
